Buying a Digital SLR
There are two kinds of people when it comes to photography. One who are natually gifted photographers and the others who hang around people with lots of photography knowledge. I can confidently say I fall into the second category. A bunch of friends at office kept discussing cameras and photographs and it all got me interested in photography.
I researched and settled on buying a Fuji S3000 4 years back and was extremely satisfied with the pictures. That was the camera I used to click photos of my kid when she was born and those are pictures I will treasure always. But then one day I laid my hands on a friend's Nikon D40X with a 17mm-200mm lens, took a few pictures of my kid and I don't think there is any turning back now changing cameras.
While taking good pictures is an art which develops over time, having a good camera is a starter. Not being an avid photographer, I decided on buying a camera with lots of functionality. While I might not use all of them, having them for later seemed exciting. Choosing a camera to buy involves researching a lot and listening a lot. With 5 friends buying a Nikon D40X and one buying a Canon Rebel XTi, I was naturally tending towards the majority. Feature wise both are almost similar, the Nikon D40X being easier to use. The Rebel XTi required some tweaking and for those who like that Canon would be the way to go.
Good photographs come from good lenses. I went with the standard 18-55mm lens that comes as a package with most Nikons. I would probably move to a 17-200mm lens later, if I feel restricted with this lens or if I get a lot more sucked into this as a hobby. The 17-200mm lens costs a lot more than maybe having 2 separate lenses, but timing matters and if you have to switch between lenses, your object in sight could well disappear :).
I hope to follow up on this post with some pictures from my camera, so stay tuned ..
